Dear Viewers,
I stayed on in London until May 23, 1976, when I flew to New York City to visit friends before busing it to California with a stop in Kansas to visit my mother. Thus, at 29, my life would ever be so changed due to the Sundowners Alexander Overland, ever so enriching me beyond description four decades later.

How I wish I had had the time to find my other great slides to include in this website, but it was not to be. As noted, a few others in The Group have contributed their photos for which I am so grateful!
Now, so many other things of greater importance occupy our time. So our gratefulness is in the facts that we were allowed to have this travel experience without any real danger, that we are still able to share it with others, that The Group has been having ongoing reunions since 1976, and that the memories of the "Sundowners Alexander Overland" are ours forevermore!

Since then I have been so fortunate to have traveled to over 70 countries. Most likely, unbeknownst to The Group when we started our trip on February 23, 1976, we were to become "ambassadors of goodwill" representing our countries. With all travelers, here is where the real understanding of our different cultures can really take place to help produce a more peaceful world.
A. Colin Treadwell of Tauck Travel hit upon this very issue in an article he wrote on March 23, 2017, entitled "Traveling Ambassadors" from Musing from Colin Treadwell
"What I experienced that day helped me to become a better ambassador in the future. I had been thrown out of my comfort zone and encountered real Egyptians on their turf [Cairo] without any protection. And I found I didn’t need any. I found that the most dangerous thing I encountered in Egypt was myself.
"It was one of many travel experiences that have shown me that people in other countries are mostly decent, kind people, just like back home."

Coming down from my "high" on this trip, I can so identify with these quotes:
"O Lord, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all: The earth is full of thy riches."
--Psalm 104:24 -- King David, 1041 BC - 971 BC
“The first day or so, we all pointed to our countries. The third or fourth day we were pointing to our continents. By the fifth day we were only aware of one earth.”
--Discovery 5 Space Mission, 1997
“I am not born for one corner: The whole world is my native land.”
--Seneca (The Younger), c. 4 BC – AD 65
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.”
--St. Augustine, 354 – 430
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
--Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad / Roughing It, 1872
"Even in challenging economic times, making sure that study abroad is part of our college students' education is a vital investment. If we want a new generation of leaders and innovators who can be effective in an ever more globalized world, sending our students overseas is not a luxury. It's a necessity."
--Rick Steves, The World is A Classroom, 2012
"As a traveler, I've often found that the more a culture differs from my own, the more I am struck by its essential humanity."
--Rick Steves, Travel as a Political Act, 2014

May you too, be, or continue to be "a traveling ambassador of good will" at home and abroad. Wishing you and yours always good and safe travels, however short or long they may be.
Godspeed to ALL and keep on traveling,
Fran Cochran
